Hello,
Does this connect to the Internet? Does it require adapters or is it built in? And does it work like the nfusion?
Thanks

The KBOX K1 receiver comes with a network module that lets you network it to your router or Internet.
On the module itself, there is an ethernet port, so you’ll need to connect cable from it to your router or modem. If you don’t want to run cable, you can use powerline adapters »
As for the functions, the KBOX K1 uses similar technology as the nFusion. The bonus is that there is the addition of a USB port and a faster processor and more memory. You can also use the KBOX stand-alone!

I just received my K-Box from Transat, the setup was simple, and straightforward. I am currently running using the receiver with my network, and the box is amazing. I had a few questions regarding setting up the network and Transat staff answered each one quickly and with great knowledge. I will be getting a few of these units for friends who want an excellent entry level box.

The K-Hub that comes with the K1, is it configured as straight through, or null for the stb?
Trying to figure if it also will work with CS6100.
Thanks
Comment by Transat
May 10, 2008 · 11:36 am
K-HUB uses a straight-thru cable, but will only work for KBOX, just as other components will work with their respective manufacturers’ hardware only (ie. Coolsat, Captain, etc).

was wondering if it will work on dial up
Comment by Transat
May 12, 2008 · 11:15 pm
Yes, you can use the K1’s networking option at home if you have either dial-up or hi-speed Internet. For dial-up, you’ll need to “share” the Internet connection from a Windows-based PC (ie, by enabling ICS - Internet Connection Sharing, and using a cross-over ethernet cable).
Otherwise, you can also use the receiver stand-alone, that is, without a network connection. The K1 comes with a USB port on its front panel.

Well, I have my new KBOX and I had only one minor problem that took awhile to figure out lol…the serial cable that came with it was wrong and I had to use one I used for my Coolsat, but I am all setup and running; the wife is happy. I also like that fact that my friends don’t have this box yet and I am watching TV and they are not. Also the picture is better than on my other receiver. I am happy and impressed. Thanks KBOX

The KBOX can be connected to your router via a network cable.
You can also connect this receiver to your PC with a straight-through serial cable, or transfer between your PC and receiver with a USB flash drive.
The PC-receiver connection is useful for repairing your receiver and/or (re)loading any original factory software.

How I can know whether the K-HUB is connected with the Internet?
Comment by Transat
May 17, 2008 · 4:40 pm
There is an indicator light on the the top of the K-HUB. Orange or red means that it is receiving power. This light will turn GREEN to show that its connected to the network.

Can you network the KBOX without the KHub?
Comment by Transat
May 19, 2008 · 6:48 pm
To network the KBOX K1 receiver, you will need the K-HUB module which gives the receiver network connectivity.
Of course, you can also use the KBOX as a “stand-alone” unit without the KHUB. This way, it works like a regular CaptiveWorks, Coolsat, Viewsat, Sonicview, etc.
Our recommended package is the KBOX with KHUB included for maximum flexibility:

Was asked to test out a K1-Heros, for my surprise it is everything i expected +++++.
great picture quality, also great audio quality.
Usb interface works like a charm.
best of it is that u can choose to have the receiver hooked up to the network (with K-HUB) or running standalone, not like N-fusion (networked only for the moment).
MOST IMPORTANT
User friendly, two thumbs up. =; )

What do the yellow and green lights near the ethernet plug mean on the KHUB?

The orange (or yellow) and green lights by the network cable indicate whether there is a connection and if there is any activity (data being sent or received).

PVR has always been a possibility with the K1 (notice the recording function buttons on the remote control…)
A factory firmware update should be available shortly that will enable the PVR functionality on all K1 receivers.

Can you hookup an external hard drive with 500 gigs to this box to record to? The reason I ask is that I have a Coolsat 7000 and have the 500gb hooked to it and it works great. I also have an nFusion but cannot record on it. I am looking for something to record that works like the nFusion (has networking). Will the KBOX fill my needs? Thank You for your time and you can answer to this e-mail.

Yes, the KBOX has PVR (personal video recording) functionality via its USB port.
It will work more or less like the Coolsat 7000, and is an excellent receiver that has similar underlying technology as nFusion.

Hi,
Does this have a dual tuner where I can record one channel while watching another channel?
Comment by Transat
May 30, 2008 · 6:34 pm
The K1 receiver is a single tuner PVR, which means you’ll only be able to record the same channel you’re watching. However, you can set the recording to function on a timer. This way, you can record what you want, when you want… even if you’re not at home.

June 4, 2008 · 12:39 am
The KBOX is designed to be setup quickly and easily. Since it functions very much like other popular free-to-air receivers on the market, the steps required to setup are very similar. A basic understanding of free-to-air systems is highly recommended, however most hobbyists and enthusiast learn as they go, and will have many questions along the way.
We would suggest browsing some of the many publicly available free-to-air forums online for a primer of what to expect. These forums are also an excellent resource when it comes to asking questions and getting immediate answers from knowledgeable users.
Besides having some basic computer/Internet skills and troubleshooting ability, patience and persistence are the key when learning anything new. Anyway, you will find that the KBOX is an excellent receiver for your hobby interests and will certainly be worth the effort and time invested.

re: Ease of Setup: nFusion vs KBOX
Neither one is really easier to setup than the other since they operate differently. With the KBOX you get a USB port and PVR (recording), among other features, meaning you have more options available to you.
Both receivers can be as easy to setup as any other free-to-air receiver on the market. The main difference is that you may need to do some basic troubleshooting if the networking does not work at first.
For the best package that gives you maximum options and versatility, we recommend the KBOX K1 with powerline network adapters »

Can it be setup on a wireless network due to my house layout really don’t want to drill holes
Comment by Transat
June 17, 2008 · 9:28 am
There is no wireless built into the receiver itself.
For “wire-less” connectivity you can use either powerline adapters:
http://transatelectronics.com/store/85mbps_P405
…or a wireless bridge/access point:
http://transatelectronics.com/store/bridge_P360
The powerline adapters will give you better speeds and work simply plug and play - no software. The wireless bridge requires configuration the first time, but allow you to have up to 4 ports so you can connect other devices and up to 2 printers too.

Yes, you can use any wireless bridge or access point or powerline adapter.
Please see the following networking options:

* Unfortunately you cannot use any USB-based wireless devices since these would normally require drivers to run and are designed for computers *

What is the difference of picture quality and the sound between the K Box and the CNX Trio? I would like to know which one is better. Thank you.
Comment by Transat
June 24, 2008 · 2:12 am
Sorry I’ve never tested the CNX Trio before so cannot offer a head-to-head analysis. Anyone else like to comment on the two?
As far as the KBOX is concerned, it has top quality sound and video and is among the best when it comes to quality in a standard-definition receiver. Depending on the TV and setup used the results can be quite nice. Some customers have commented that the K1 approaches “HD-like” appearance at times.

I wanted to know if my pc is on the second floor of my home and I wanted to use the powerline adapter connected to the Kbox in my basement rec room aprox 35 feet away will it work?
Comment by Transat
June 30, 2008 · 2:16 am
Yes, you can bridge the connection between 2 rooms in the same home with a pair of the powerline adapters.
For example, you can connect one adapter at your router or modem. Another adapter can be used near your receiver in a different room, ie. upstairs or downstairs.
Each other device (PC, laptop, XBOX, Playstation etc) will only require one extra adapter. In this way, you can connect anywhere between 1 to 15 devices all in the same house with powerline adapters while saving the trouble of running messy wires.
KBOX with Powerline Adapters »
Pair of Powerline Adapters »
By the way, powerline adapters work best when plugged directly into a wall outlet. You may experience some problems when using power bars or extension cables.

How will the KBOX work when broadcasters switch to digital broadcasting?
Thanks
Comment by Transat
July 1, 2008 · 3:50 am
To make sense of all the confusion, we need to understand a few of the key differences:
There is a difference between SD (standard-definition) and HD (high-definition), where high-definition gives you much clearer picture quality with more lines of resolution.
There is also a difference between digital and analog signals, similar to the difference between VHS and DVD, cassette and CD’s, etc.
It’s true that there is a switch-over from analog to digital video signals… but this is for over the air (OTA) television signals. That means, all your local broadcasts are switching over to digital. With digital, it’s now possible to receive these channels in HD as well. So not only will the reception come in with less interference, the picture itself may also be clearer. You can receive OTA signals with a high-definition antenna connected to your LCD or plasma TV if the TV has a built-in ATSC tuner. Most new TV’s nowadays will have the ATSC tuner included.
As for satellite, all the channels we are used to seeing are already in digital formats. However, digital does not necessarily mean HD. Given that all the satellite channels are in digital, only a handful are actually in HD. More and more will be added with time.
For more information about the digital format that modern free-to-air receivers use, please see:

Comment by Transat
July 10, 2008 · 12:25 pm
To bridge the connection between 2 rooms, you will need 1 pair (or 2 pieces). One will connect to your modem or router, and the other piece will connect in the other room to the device you want to use.
Devices that can be used include satellite receivers, laptops, PC’s, game consoles, etc

Currently have a dead CS 5000 (who knows?). Was considering replacing with a HD receiver. Reading the KBox comments sounds like this one might be the best choice. Which HD would Transat recommend? Or would it be best to just go with a SD KBox. I am a simple TV guy with no need for networking etc. Thanks. Glen.
Comment by Transat
July 15, 2008 · 8:38 am
At present there is no KBOX HD receiver just yet… however the picture quality of the KBOX K1 will certainly rival that of any other standard-definition (SD) receiver currently on the market.
The decision to buy an HD receiver depends on whether you’re willing to accept the price tag and the limited number of channels available in HD at the current time. Of course, more and more HD channels are being added all the time… but so too are new HD receivers appearing on the market.

At this time we would recommend the KBOX for the best blend of performance, features, and stability. This receiver can be networked or run stand-alone. There is a USB port for transferring from your PC and also for PVR (personal video recording) functionality.
The menus and layout is quite straightforward and easy to use, while the picture quality is on-par with some of the best boxes out there.
